Airtel Africa has unveiled plans to float its mobile payments firm, Airtel Money, on the London stock market. This move is widely anticipated to provide a significant boost to the City of London, attracting a major new listing amidst ongoing competition from international financial hubs.

Airtel Africa, already a prominent constituent of London’s FTSE 100 index, confirmed its intention for Airtel Money to be separately listed on the London Stock Exchange. The proposed initial public offering (IPO), which involves offering shares in a private company to the public for the first time, is being hailed as one of London's most substantial market debuts in recent years.

Financial data compiled by Bloomberg indicates that the company aims to raise approximately 800 million US dollars, equivalent to around £601 million, through the IPO. This capital injection is expected to support the mobile money platform's continued growth and expansion across its operating markets.

Airtel Money currently serves an extensive customer base of approximately 53 million individuals across 14 African countries. The platform offers a range of essential financial services, enabling users to make payments, settle household bills, withdraw cash, and access other crucial money management tools directly from their mobile phones. This wide adoption underscores the growing importance of mobile money in facilitating financial inclusion and economic activity across the continent.

The service operates through a comprehensive network of agent branches and kiosks, making financial access available even in remote areas. In its last financial year, Airtel Money reported robust financial performance, generating revenues of around 1.4 billion US dollars (approximately £1.1 billion). The mobile payments division functions as a key subsidiary of Airtel Africa, a leading telecommunications provider that is part of the larger Indian conglomerate, Bharti Enterprises.

The decision by Airtel Africa to choose the United Kingdom as the destination for this high-profile IPO has been met with a positive reception within London's financial community. The City has recently faced scrutiny regarding its attractiveness as a global listing venue, with fewer companies opting to debut on its exchanges compared to some competitor markets. The arrival of a major African technology firm is seen as a vote of confidence in London's capacity to host significant international flotations.

While there has been a modest uptick in IPO activity this year, following a relatively quiet period after a spurt of listings towards the close of 2025, truly large-scale flotations have remained less frequent. Notable recent examples include the listing of tinned tuna producer Princes Group and the small business lender Shawbrook.

Airtel Money's planned debut is positioned to be among the largest initial public offerings in the pipeline since the successful flotation of the well-known fintech firm Wise in 2021. Its scale is expected to inject dynamism into the London market, potentially encouraging other international companies to consider a UK listing.

The company has stated its expectation to publish a detailed prospectus next month. This document will provide prospective investors with comprehensive information regarding the IPO, including financial statements, risk factors, and the final offering price range. This will mark a crucial step towards the successful execution of the listing.
